Hello and welcome to the first session of Village Camps 2007!! And an especially big welcome to all the campers who are joining us for the first time! It is always great to see so many new faces, as well as all of those who are on their second, third or even fourth year here with us! In a way, this summer is a first for everyone, including most of our staff- construction on the campus of the international school meant that we were unable to hold camp there this year, but luckily we have the fabulous facilities of the College de Terre Sainte available to us, and these first couple of days at camp have run smoothly and been a huge success.

The Introduction meeting yesterday morning was followed by Ice-Breaking games and then the different ages split up, the Mini campers to mini Olympics, and the intermediates and seniors went off to one of the numerous other on-campus activities: Dance, Drama, Arts and Crafts, Gyms 1 and 2, Music or Luna Field, to name a few. As always, a healthy amount of Six Square was mixed in with all the activities.

Today was the first day that any of the groups went off campus on excursions, with the cold weather we decided to change the trips to Nyon pool and some other outdoor venues, but there were still groups at the Natural History museum in Geneva, bowling in Gland, and swimming at the indoor pool in Geneva.

We handed out Village Camps t-shirts today to all the, as well as caps for all campers who ordered them, unfortunately the weather for the next few days is not supposed to be great, so it is a good idea to make sure the children have a raincoat with them for the rest of the week.

Overall, apart from the inevitably hectic arrival and departure periods in the first few mornings, these first two days have surpassed all our predictions, and it seems like we are all set for another wonderful summer at Village Camps. There are lots of activities and excursions planned and it looks like both campers and staff will have a wonderful six weeks.

   John

Originally from England, John has spent his life living in Morocco and Switzerland. This is his second year working with us at Village Camps, he has been a counselor to groups of seven and eight year olds, and currently is the Senior Counselor for group SA2, he also worked as a mountain bike guide for young children last summer.

John is a student of history and Arabic at the University of Edinburgh, and as part of his studies recently spent time in Egypt and Damascus. He is an avid rugby player, having played with teams in England, Switzerland, New Zealand and Scotland (he is also a rugby fan, and laments the current weak state of the English Rugby team!)

He is also a talented musician, having obtained certificates from the Guildhall School of music in London, and now plays saxophone in his local jazz band. We consider ourselves lucky that he has chosen to return for a second summer and can only hope that he continues to return year after year!
